Life Science (Lab) - 3030
Grade 9
One Trimester
Life Science is an
introduction to biology course. Students develop problem resolution skills
while performing laboratory investigations of fundamental biological concepts
and principles. Students enrolled in Life Science will explore the functions
and processes of cells within all living organisms, the sources and patterns
of genetic inheritance and variation leading to biodiversity, and the
relationships of living organisms to each other and to the environment as a
whole. This class does not meet Core 40 or HD standards.
Biology I
(Lab) - 3024C
Grades 9-10
Two Trimesters
Biology I is a
course based on regular laboratory and field investigations that include a
study of the structures and functions of living organisms and their
interactions with the environment. At a minimum, students enrolled in Biology
I explore the functions and processes of cells, tissues, organs, and systems
within various species of living organisms and the roles and
interdependencies of organisms within populations, communities, ecosystems,
and the biosphere. Students work with the concepts, principles, and theories
of the living environment. In addition, students enrolled in this course are
expected to: (1) gain an understanding of the history and development of
biological knowledge, (2) explore the uses of biology in various careers, and
(3) investigate the biological questions and problems related to personal
needs and societal issues.
Biology I
[HD] (Lab) - 3024H
Grades 9-10
Two Trimesters
Designed for
students seeking an honors diploma and/or planning to study science or
engineering in college, this course presents the same topics as Biology I,
but each area will be covered in more depth. Expectations of and
responsibilities placed on students will be at a higher level than those in
the regular course.
Biology,
Advanced Placement (Lab) - 3020
Grades 11-12
Three Trimesters
Prerequisite(s):
Biology I and Chemistry I
This course
follows the College Board Examination guidelines for Advanced Placement
Biology which consists of an intensive review and in-depth study of areas
that were introduced in Biology I. Attention is given to the application of
chemical principles as related to living systems. The course is designed for
juniors and seniors who received an A or B in Biology I or those who have
instructor approval.
Principles
of Biomedical Sciences (Lab) - 5648
Grades 9-12
Two Trimesters
This course provides
an introduction to the biomedical sciences through exciting
“hands-on” projects and problems. Student work involves the study
of human medicine, research processes and an introduction to bioinformatics.
This course is designed to provide and overview of all the courses in the
Biomedical Science program and to lay the scientific foundation necessary for
student success in the subsequent courses. This is the first course in a
series of four. The course is geared primarily to freshman but can be taken
by students at any grade level. This course does not count for Core 40 or
Academic Honors.
Human Body
Systems (Lab) - 5216
Grades 9-12
Two Trimesters
The human body is
a complex system requiring care and maintenance. This course will engage
students in the study of basic human physiology, especially in relationship
to human health. Students will use a variety of monitors to examine body
systems (respiratory, circulatory, and nervous) at rest and under stress, and
observe the interactions between the various body systems. Students will use
Lab View software to design and build systems to monitor body functions.
Environmental Science, Advanced
(Lab) - 3010
Grades 11-12
Two Trimesters
Prerequisite(s):
Biology I, 2 other Core 40 science credits
Environmental Science,
Advanced, is an interdisciplinary course that integrates biology, earth
science, chemistry, and other disciplines. Students enrolled in this course
conduct in depth scientific studies of ecosystems, population dynamics,
resource management, and environmental consequences of natural and
anthropogenic processes. Students formulate, design, and carry out laboratory
and field investigations as an essential course component. Students
completing Environmental Science, Advanced, acquire the essential tools for
understanding the complexities of national and global environmental systems.
