Unit Twelve: Growing Global Connections

Increasing connections among the peoples of the world is a trend that pre-dates civilization. From the time of the first European explorations this trend intensified. It also was increasingly dominated by Europeans (and Americans). The 1800s saw the peak of this dominance in the Age of Imperialism.

During this grading period, you will be writing a major paper for this course. The assignment you will be working on this week is a "kick-off" assignment to prepare you for the formalities of the paper to come.

Prompt: What effect(s) did imperialism have on _______ during the nineteenth century?

You will be researching imperialism and its effects on one of the following countries/places. Be sure to limit your paper and research to the years 1800-1910. Focus on events associated with imperialism and their effects. You don’t have to cover the whole period if imperialism came to the region later than 1800 (as is usually the case).

You should have two sources for your paper, neither one of which can be Wikipedia or any other kind of encyclopedia or dictionary that is either online or a printed source. Please refer to the handout on how to evaluate a webpage. If you have questions about acceptable sources, ask us during the research time in the library and computer lab.
