World Studies 2008
For this project you will be taking on the role of the historian. Your job is to connect something in the past of your family or a family friend to the broader trends of history.
You will be writing a short paper and giving a brief overview of your research to the class.
This paper is about someone from your family or someone you know, but not specifically about you. If you are a part of their story that is fine, but this is not autobiography.
The topic can be about anything, but you must tie their experience to a broader issue or event in World History.
Your sources must include an interview with at least one person. Other sources can be specific to their experiences (newspaper articles, journals, etc.) or relate to the broader issue or event.
At least half of your paper should come from research, not from the interview.
You must include 4 sources. An interview can only count as one source.
Paper. 100 points. (50 content; 50 style)
The paper must be at least 1000 words, no more than 1500 (5 pages). You must have at least four FULL pages. Extra spacing does not count! The paper should be typed, double-spaced in size 12 Times New Roman font. No more than half of the paper should be about the persons experiences; the other half should relate that to the larger issue, trend or event. The paper must include a bibliography with at least 4 sources (no encyclopedias, wikipedias, or non-professional websites). We must approve all websites. You must cite your sources using parenthetical citation throughout the paper for paraphrased and quoted material.
The research paper is a project in which every step is important. You will receive points for those steps. The final paper will count approximately 50% of the total project. This project is a process. The final paper is a part of the process. It must evolve from all previous steps in order for you to receive full credit. Due dates are important!

You cannot omit any part of the project. You may turn in late work for no credit in order to turn in the next step of the research paper. We will not give credit to any paper whose work in progress we have not seen.
Research papers are due at the beginning of the period. Papers handed in after the due date will count for half credit. Absence is not an excuse for not turning in the research paper. If you are absent the day it is due, you must email the final draft during the period in which it is due.
All work must be original. Any work that is not properly documented or any work which is not the student's own in any way shape, or form will receive a grade of 0. There will be no redos on the research paper. You will not be getting your final paper back.
