Student Reflections

Question 1

Reflect on the instruction you have received over the last three days. How is this different from other approaches to learning that you have experienced?

Thoughts (these are the actual quotes from some students):
"We were almost teaching ourselves."
"We kind of got to make our own structure. Cause we usually just get given instructions and can't say anything about it...it was cool like that."
"Well, I don't know they really didn't give us a lot of instructions sometimes it was caouse and we didn't know what to do."
"It's different because it was more hands on and interactive."
"Your actually doing the stuff..."
"They way we did it the last days we were acctually tring things."
"This way we all had to be a part of the equations. It also helped out in a beter way b/c it was kind of like a 3D equation."
"We were being taped for the internet."
"We had a bunch of teachers to help us."
"You have more than one person trying ot teach you the same thing, but they have different ways to do it."
"We worked with more than one teacher which made it alot easier."
"It was a lot more individual because there were more teachers and more activitys".
"...different methods of learning."
"It was ok. They treated us little like 7 year olds. I learned a little about slopes and x,y intercepts. We got up and used more energy."
"I became involved. It was funner to be involved."
"I think I learned more because it was fun."
"I wanted to do more things like be involved with problems that we did."
"They had more physical activities, like building the rafts that took your mind off math, which was nice. They kind of let you find the answers your own way."

Question 2

How is it similar?

Thoughts (these are the actual quotes from some students):
"...we worked in groups!"
"We were learning past stuff."
"The curriculum is the same."
"We learned the same things that would have been taught in a classroom."
"We were still learning about math."
"Your still making a graph the stuff is the same."
"We were still answering the questions and having them more right."
"The homework was the same."
"Worksheets and homework, that I didn't understand. The teaching style was confusing b4ecause I'm more thuroy confused than I was before."
"...I learned better through the activities."
"When it came down to it we would be learning something new and hope to understand it better both ways."
"We usually have instructions."
"We went to the dance studio."
"I don't really think it was similar, to what we normally do in class."

Question 3

Do you feel that one method is more effective than another for learning new concepts? Why?

Thoughts (these are actual quotes from some students):
"No, they are about the same."
"I think it is the same. I learned he slope intersect form, but I would have learned it witha different method."
"No, all methods work the same. Yet some methods (more of a hands-on theme) work better for me. because I work better w/ visual pic.... tangible items."
"I think the last day where we wore the points helped show how it worked."
"I think having one teacher in a class room, with no camerasm with a chalkboard is better that way you don't have two people telling you two different things."
"I think just staying in class with one teacher is the best method to learn."
"Hands on is alot easier for me to work withm then if it wasn't hands on. It's harder for me to comprehend."
"I definately think physical learning, hands on, is vetter and easier to comprehend than verbal."
"I think that the checker board concept was really good. I got a lot from it, the slope-intercept form...it was a easy way of learning something."
"The more hands on activitys, the easyer it is to understand how the method is used in real life situations."
"I liked having a big group in the dance room better. Because we got up moved around and everyone was involved int he equation guessing game."
"I think leaving the classroom was more effective."
"I don't learn as much by doing worksheets."
"Yes so you can see the different sides."
"...you actually see how and why it works instead of just being told."
"...it is more physical and not sit in a chair boring."
"Making our own instructions,I think, gets the kids more involved in the activity."
"I think when we actually do the problems with other thing we understand it more"
"Some people learn better by doing things themselves. And being involved. But others likek sitting at a desk and just listening."

Question 4

Which method do you prefer and why?

Thoughts (these are the actual quotes from some students):
"I like both. Yours was more fun though. Thanks for the change of pace."
"I like just having one teacher because its easier and you don't have other people teaching you different ways."
"W/out the internet and 5 people."
"I don't know I prefer the people leading us to the directions and the activitiy."
"I liked the things we did the last 3 days, but I didn't fully understand everything because we moved pretty fast."
"I liked the 'hands on' project better."
"To see & be able to touch the items."
"The hands on activity method because it is easyer to learn from."
"I liked their methosd because there's more action going on."
"Being more involved. I like moving around and doing things myself. It's just a lot funner."
"I prefer this method b/c it helped me out."
"I learn from getting input from my classmates."
I like getting out of the classroom, because it gets boring being in the same room everyday, at the same time."
"The one were we actually do the things."
"Some people like doing things by themselves."
"Making your own instructions, it's funner."
"When we were teaching ourselfs, because I felt I could understand it better."
