A Lesson Before Dying

Creative Options

Listed below are some ideas of possible projects to do over the novel. We will give you a little time to work in class, but it is your responsibility to take this project seriously and work outside of class. We expect quality work. You may use your notes, study guides, the novel, the movie, and our discussions for ideas. We will be glad to help you as much as we can. Ultimately, though, this is your assignment. Good luck!

The projects are due _____ Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003_______________________

  1. We’ve read Jefferson’s diary. Write a diary from Miss Emma or Tante Lou’s perspective. What issues would trouble the women? What would they try to do? What would their daily life be like? Use your imagination to get inside their minds and thoughts. The entries could continue after Jefferson’s death. Your diary needs to have at least five entries.
  2. Write a series of at least three poems from the perspectives of Miss Emma, Tante Lou, the Sheriff, Jefferson, or Grant. What are their personalities and beliefs? Remember, poems don’t have to rhyme! Your poems should be typed.
  3. You are Jefferson’s defense attorney. What would you have said to have him found not guilty? Come up with a defense you think would work. Either write out a defense strategy or make a detailed poster describing it. The written defense should be at least two typed pages. Your defense should be significantly different than the defense attorney’s argument in the book.
