A Lesson Before Dying

Creative Options

Listed below are some ideas of possible projects to do over the novel. We will give you a little time to work in class, but it is your responsibility to take this project seriously and work outside of class. We expect quality work. You may use your notes, study guides, the novel, the movie, and our discussions for ideas. We will be glad to help you as much as we can. Ultimately, though, this is your assignment. Good luck!

The projects are due ________________Friday, Sept. 20, 2004____________

  1. We’ve read (or will read) Jefferson’s diary. Write a diary from Miss Emma, Vivian, or Tante Lou’s perspective. What issues would trouble the women? What would they try to do? What would their daily life be like? Use your imagination to get inside their minds and thoughts. The entries could continue after Jefferson’s death.

  1. Write a series of at least three poems from the perspectives of Miss Emma, Tante Lou, the Sheriff, Jefferson, Vivian, or Grant. What are their personalities and beliefs? What are their hopes and dreams? Remember, poems don’t have to rhyme!

  1. You are Jefferson’s defense attorney. What would you have said to have him found not guilty? Come up with a defense you think would work.
