CALENDAR for week of NOVEMBER 26-30

MONDAY, Nov. 26: Students have handout for vocabulary development to "Coming into the Country, " a report on p. 399+ of Elements of Literature. Students will read this report and be prepared to work in a small group on Tuesday.

TUESDAY, Nov. 27: Students will have read "Coming into the Country;" by end of period on Wednesday. Questions 1-5 at end of story will be assigned for appearance in Writer's Notebook by Friday. We did a SURVIVAL exercise to challenge creativity.

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 28: We reviewed DOLs for days 3,4,5. Research techniques used by author of McPhee and p. 397 were addressed for future report writing. Students had some time to read silently and/or work on assigned questions or next assignment.

THURSDAY, Nov. 29: "Annie," p. 437+ was assigned; vocabulary handout given--due on Monday, Dec. 3rd. Students were reminded of spelling quiz on Friday and the need to have their chosen NONFICTION book with them for READING DAY! Answer questions 3,4,6,10 on p. 444 in your writer's notebook. Handout on Plain Style due next Tuesday.

FRIDAY, Nov. 30: Students took Spelling quiz #1 (12 words, starts with "humorous"); students read, had "exit slip" to report their reading progress. Their book projects are due on Jan. 3; they have a handout describing their options for this project.

DOL correction sheet handed out; study it for quiz next Wednesday.

WEEK 2, trimester 2

 

Monday, Dec. 3: Annie vocabulary will be collected; we will have a quiz on WEDNESDAY, Dec. 5 over selected vocab words from last 3 vocab. handouts. Students will listen to tape from "Life on the Mississippi," by Mark Twain and read along in their textbooks. Students are reminded to be thinking of a suitable "survivor" story of their own; we'll start these in a couple of days. NEW DOLS! (Finish by next Friday; we'll start review of these tomorrow).

Tuesday, Dec. 4: Review conducted by teacher for quiz on Wednesday over readings and selected vocabulary from them. Spelling pre-test over 2nd 12 words on spelling list, starting with "intelligence" and ending with "literature." The REAL test will be Friday, Dec. 7.

Wednesday, Dec. 5: Quiz over stories-voc/DOLs from previous week. Worth 40-50 points. Note: stories covered on this quiz are "Barrio Boy," "Coming into the Country," and "The Night the Bed Fell." Vocab covered from "Coming into the Country," and "The Night..Fell"--know meaning of word. DOLS should be studied--the exact version will be on the test. Most of test is multiple choice with a few fill-in-the blanks and one short answer part which will be open book. As this is an announced quiz, even if you were absent the day before, you should be ready to take it upon your return unless circumstances of your illness or absence were extreme. Note from parent needed if so.

Thursday, Dec. 6: QUIZ results returned. Writing Day. Bring ideas; we will draft in lab.Handout given to help you be a SURVIVOR!

Friday, Dec. 7: Reading Non-Fiction book day. Grading rubric for Jan. 3rd presentation handed out.Vocabulary notebook inspected--should have at least 10 words in by now.DOLS for Week 2 reviewed.Spell quiz for those who did not ace pre-test.

Monday, Dec. 10: Tape on Life heard; CLAUSES handout given. This is due Wednesday. (We did ex. 1 together in class). Time for "Behind the Golden Mask" given along with new vocabulary sheet Questions 1-5, p.479 ("Life on Miss")assigned for writer's notebook (collected Wednesday).Spell word list reviewed.

Tuesday, Dec. 11: Clauses, continued: handout on Subordinate clauses due; in class exercise. DOLS for week reviewed for days 1 and 2. Time for reading "Behind the Golden Mask," or finishing "Life on Mississippi" questions (479). Students will also answer questions 1-4 on "Behind the Golden Mask." HOMEWORK RETURNED.

Clauses work collected today and tomorrow.

Wednesday, Dec. 12: Trip to Computer Lab ( drafting our Survivor Stories); Writer's STORIES ARE DUE ON FRIDAY (turn in any drafts, notes, etc. with finished story). Note correction to handout on Non-fiction story: it should say 250-300, not 50-300 words for length. Helpful checklist given out. Collection of NOTEBOOKS delayed until after break. NOTE THIS CHANGE!

Thursday, Dec. 13: DOLS reviewed. Handouts for book report rubrics. Drafts returned. Review of last two stories' techniques in narrative..Time given for peer review of non-fiction "Survivor" story; use scoring guide handed out last week.

Friday, Dec. 14: Quiz (includes spelling words, clauses, and this week's dols). Rubrics for book reports handed out (book reports due JAN. 4th.)SILENT READING TIME. Note: all SURVIVOR STORIES due today;please attach "Strong Verb" exercise (having done any 10) and the checklist given to you on Wednesday. Reminders re reading your non-fiction book and making your own vocabulary notebook from it.

Monday: No school--teacher work day. Students may see me in room 214 between 1 and 5 P.M. if necessary.

Tuesday (15th): COUNSELORS in room to talk about scheduling.Did you answer questions 6 and 9 for "Scarlet Ibis"? Vocabulary handout for "The Old Demon."

Wednesday (16th): Spelling quiz. "The Old Demon" should be read; students should be ready to discuss in small groups (Grades will be posted today; you should get your final report card in SRT next week; you should stay after class to see your English grade. If you want to discuss it, make an appointment; I can give you some tips for improving in my course!). p. 160-161, E. of Lit. book, answer questions 5,7,8. BALLAD assignment given after reading of "The Demon Lover,"p. 350-351 and 355+ for the poem itself.

Thursday (17th):"Old Demon" vocab should be finished."The Cask of Amontillado," with vocab handout and discussion questions.For "Cask" answer questions 1,4,5,7 ,8,9,11 at end of story--should be in your notebooks when I collect later next week. Scoring Guide for Ballads handed out.

Friday (18th): WORK TIME (all Old Demon vocab work should be turned in today).BALLADS must be written and ready for performance today!. I will collect your notebooks with assigned questions from short stories NEXT FRIDAY, so make sure you've kept up.

WEDNESDAY, Jan 23: DOLS handed out; due Friday, Jan. 25. Ballads finished; Brief REVIEW of material for test (including the 20 vocabulary words you need to study (yesterday's vocab handed back; "The Scarlet Ibis," "The Old Demon," and "The Cask of Amontillado." You should also review pp.350-357, regrarding ballads..

THURSDAY, Jan. 24: Study time; test; work time.

FRIDAY, Jan. 25: DOLS reviewed, collected; Writer's Choice Books handed out; assignment in "Capitalization" unit. Notebooks collected.Students should have completed 681, ex. 7 and ex. 9, p.683 by Monday.

MONDAY, Jan. 28: Capitalization exercises collected after we've gone over them in class. Notebook additional items summarized, collected. Next assignment is ex. 11.pp. 685; then exercises 2 and 3, p. 688. We will move on to chapter 21 (Punctuation) as time permits (probably on Wednesday).

TUESDAY, Jan. 29th: Pre-test for spelling words (spell list, 2nd column, "pastime" to end of column) tomorrow; homework =p.690, ":Mixed Review,"#4.

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 30: Novel selection, handout.Spell review. Capitals practice writing exercise--TEST tomorrow on Capitalization.

THURSDAY, Jan. 31: Test over Capitalization. Distribution of novel ( Andromeda Strain, Great Expectations, Hound of the Baskervilles, Rebecca, Lord of the Flies--student chooses one). Work time for reading OR finishing the Capitals Creative Writing exercise given out yesterday. It's due on FRIDAY, Feb. 1! Spell review.

FRIDAY, Feb. 1 NOVEL: READING DAY + spelling quiz (selection of school novel must be made--cannot be changed, once made.) Keep a VOCABULARY NOTEBOOK as you did with your non-fiction book: word, definition, and original sentence. You'll need 25 of these. BRING YOUR WRITER'S CHOICE BOOK on Monday until relieved of it sometime next week. Fridays will be READING DAYS once again.

Feb. 5, Tuesday: Today we reviewed pp. 700-704, and finished exercise 10 on page 704 (all ) in class. If you were absent, please do it and doublecheck with me to make sure you are learning the material. . Homework tonight (much of which students finished in class) includes these exercises:

Feb. 11 (Monday): Grammar Bowl (team game review of chapter 21)

Feb. 12 (Tuesday): Test over chapter 21 (a handful of questions on capitalization, so don't forget chapter 20).

Feb. 13 (Wednesday): Intro to "Romeo and Juliet,"(buring questions--e.g. What IS iambic pentameter???), vocabulary, drama terms, Act I--bring your LITERATURE book and leave WC in your locker until finals review.

Feb. 14 (Thursday): THE PLAY'S THE THING: Film version, through Act III

Feb. 15 (Friday): READING DAY: bring your novel. Read (you should be about done with the book by now--this is an OUTSIDE CLASS READING ASSIGNMENT--if you haven't been reading, or if you've thought you'd read the whole book in the 3 Reading Days appropriated for it, think again! YOU MUST KEEP UP DAILY READING! If you have read your book, plan to work SILENTLY on your JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT or your VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT. (We will devote next Thursday, Friday to our Novels).

Weekend: work on your JOURNAL assignment over your novel.
