Graduation Requirements -- Regular Diploma

It is important to meet with your guidance counselor to review graduation requirements and debelop the appropriate schedule.
In order to graduate from Bloomington high School South, a student must comply with the following requirements.

1. English (9 credits) English 9, 10 and 11 (American Literature C40 or AP) is required, no substitutions.

The following courses can be substituted for English 12-1 and/or English 12-2:

  • English Literature 1-2
  • Ethnic Literature
  • Literature & Composition AP 1-2
  • Advanced Comp ACP W131
  • Advanced Lit ACP A202
  • Speech

A maximum of two credits in a third, fourth, fifth year level foreign language. (Not recommended though)

2. Mathematics (4 credits)

3. Science (4 credits) Two credits in 2 different areas (Life-Life Science or Biology, Physical- Physical Science, Chemistry or Physics, Earth- Earth and Space Science, Integrated Chemistry- Physics)

4. Social Studies (6 credits) required: Government, Economics, U.S. History 1-2 and 2 electives

5. Health Education (1 credit in grade 10)
The Health credit may be waived if the following four (4) credits are earned:

  • Consumer Economics
  • Nutrition and Wellness
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Child Development and Parenting -or- Human Development and Family Wellness

6. Physical Education (2 terms in grade 9)
It is strongly recommended that all students enroll in Computer Keyboarding and Computer Applications in order to prepare to meet the requirements of college and/or the workplace.

Total required-25 credits

  • Electives-17 credits
  • Grand total-42 credits

Notes:

  • A credit is earned by the satisfactory completion of one term of class work;
    a term grade of A, B, C or D denotes completion of a course.
    Courses that meet one class period daily award one credit per term
    except Basic Physical Education which awards only on-half credit per term.
    Certain courses may award credit for non-standard instructional time
    as permitted by waivers granted for ALPS programs.
  • A course cannot be repeated for credit unless it is designated "repeatable" in the course selection guide.
  • Students are expected to take the following sequence of courses:
    • Freshman year -- English and Physical Education
    • Sophomore year -- English and Health
    • Junior year -- English and U.S. History
    • Senior year -- English, Government and Economics
  • In order to graduate from high school, a pupil will attend at least 11 terms in grades 9 through 12. (Certain ALP, gifted and talented students may be exempt from this requirement.)
  • Specific exceptions to graduation requirements are available to gifted and talented students participating in an approved ALPS program. See the ALPS Coordinator for more information.
  • Three types of diplomas can be earned: Regular, Core 40 or Academic honors. A regular diploma is earned by meeting the graduation requirements listed above and passing the I-STEP.
